Since 2007, La Folie Lodge has been deeply rooted in the life of Don Daeng Island. From the very beginning, it was built by local hands, using local materials, as we embraced the spirit of the community. Local artisans crafted the lodge from exquisite indigenous timbers, and it has remained true to those origins ever since. Over the years, we’ve strengthened our bonds with our neighbors, supporting the island through school renovations, medical dispensaries, and vital infrastructure projects.
This partnership inspired us to pursue Travelife certification, which crowned 15 years of effort. Meeting its rigorous standards, we became the first hotel in Southern Laos to achieve this — a proud testament to our commitment to sustainable, responsible practices.
But as a small, independent lodge, every Kip counts: between paperwork and real progress. We found the costly audits and rigid, one-size-fits-all requirements designed in cushy offices added little here on the ground — and even less for guests who value authenticity over labels.
Our priority remains clear: supporting our community, preserving our environment, and caring for our guests. The resources once spent on certification are now invested directly into education, our team, and tangible improvements our guests and neighbors can see and feel.
Sustainability is who we are — and those who care don’t need a badge to believe it. We’ll keep doing the right thing, just without the bureaucracy.
You can discover all our sustainability policies, community projects, and environmental measures — from how we reduce and manage our environmental impact, support and respect labor and human rights, engage with the local community, uphold quality assurance, ensure health and safety, and protect children — in the Sustainability Policies Statement available in the hotel directory in your room and the extract below.
