Sustainability on Don Daeng
Part of island life, since 2007.
La Folie Lodge was built by local hands, using local materials, on Don Daeng island in southern Laos. Our connection to this place begins with the people who built the lodge and continues with those who welcome you today.
For us, caring for the island means providing local employment, supporting village projects and paying attention to how we use resources each day.

Our team is recruited largely from Don Daeng. Employment continues through the quieter months, alongside training in hospitality, English, first aid and fire safety.
Beyond the lodge, we have supported school renovations, improvements to the island’s medical dispensary and village infrastructure. These projects bring together the lodge, our guests and local residents.

Much of this work takes place quietly, in the kitchen, the gardens and the choices we make when something needs replacing.
Buying closer to home
We favour local suppliers where possible and offer a selection of handicrafts made in Laos. These purchases help keep a share of the lodge’s spending within the local economy.
Using less
Reducing unnecessary packaging and single use plastics remains a priority, including in our bathroom amenities. When replacing equipment, we consider energy efficiency alongside durability.
Sorting & composting
We separate waste for reuse and recycling where local collection allows. Organic kitchen waste is used to make compost for the garden.
Looking after the riverbank
Planting along the embankment helps protect the soil from erosion. Caring for these plants is part of our work beside a river whose level changes with the seasons.
The gardens
A place we tend each day.
Between the bungalows, trees and tropical plants give shade and shelter. In the kitchen garden, compost returns organic matter to the soil.
Take time to walk the paths, read the tree labels and notice what is growing around you.
There is always more to improve. Our priorities include reducing waste, using water and energy carefully, and choosing equipment that will last.

How can I support the island during my stay?
Choose locally made handicrafts and local services. If you would like to support a community project, speak with our team about current needs before bringing gifts or supplies.
What should I keep in mind when exploring the villages?
Dress respectfully when visiting temples, ask before photographing people and take your litter with you. Don Daeng is home to a living community; leave space for people to go about their day.
How can I help conserve water and energy?
Switch off lights and air conditioning when you leave your room, and keep doors and windows closed while the air conditioning is running. Let us know if you notice a dripping tap or another maintenance issue.
